Glossary  (heat)

Amps Or amperage, the amount of electricity “flowing” through your heater and wires
 
BTU  Abbreviation for British Thermal Unit it’s used to measure a quantity of heat.
 
CFM Abbreviation for cubic foot of air per minute used for measuring amount of air like gallons of water
 
Disconnect Switch A power switch that meets the code requirement’s for disengaging power to the heater
 
Double Pole Disconnect Switch A power switch that meets the code requirement’s for disengaging power to the heater
 
Double Pole Thermostat Both wire switches the heater on or off
 
FPM Abbreviation for feet per minute, in regards to the speed of air  like miles per hour
 
Integral thermostat Thermostat mounted inside of the heater
 
KW  Abbreviation for 1000 watts per hour
 
Line voltage thermostat Remote mounted thermostat (on wall for to reduce power from line volts to control volts i.e. 240 to 24 volts
 
Night set back Reference to a thermostat that can lower or raise the room temperature per a time clock setting   
 
Primary transformer

A device use to reduce the voltage in a heater, i.e. 120 volts to 24 volts

 
Recessed housing General term for installing a heater in between your wall studs
 
RPM Abbreviation for revolutions per minute, speed of a wheel on blower or shaft turning on motor
Single Pole Disconnect Switch A power switch that meets the code requirement’s  (for one wire only) for disengaging power to the heater
 
Single Pole Thermostat Only one wire switches the heater on or off
 
Surface Mounting Frame This is an optional frame that surrounds a heater so that you can mount it on a wall rather than inside the wall  
 
T Bar Frame Kit This provides the ability of mounting a heater in a suspended ceiling
 
Tamper Resistant Reduces the ability to change thermostat settings in a heater or wall thermostat
 
Transformer Relay A single package device that provides 24 volts to control the thermostat and includes a relay to turn power on and off to heater
 
Watt Amount of power (electricity) used in your heater
